One of the most exciting new additions to OWL is private fund returns – more than 8,500 individual IRRs pulled from public documents are now easily accessible on OWL, along with customized benchmarks. August was also a big month for allocator-side features. We extended Who to Follow so it now suggests allocators as well as managers, added curated allocator groups alongside a rebuilt and expanded set of manager groups, and made it easier for allocators to invite managers onto the platform. Private companies also got their own dedicated pages and are now searchable from global search, and we supplemented location data for thousands of managers.

Private Fund Returns

Public pensions and endowments often disclose the performance of the funds they hold, but that data sits scattered across hundreds of separate documents in dozens of formats. Many are only available via FOIA request. We are excited to have this data in OWL, mapped across managers and specific vintages to report IRR, TVPI, or DPI across roughly 8,500 funds.

In addition to this data being visible on manager profiles, users can find it on the Private Funds tab on the left menu and the data can be filtered across a number of metrics:

For any specific fund and vintage, you can see the reported performance metrics along with the source docs:

The breadth of our data also allows us to create benchmarks by vintage and strategy:

Users can also quickly compare a specific fund’s performance against other funds of the same vintage:

Who to Follow Now Covers Allocators

In June, we launched “Who to Follow” for managers and in August, we expanded it to include allocators. OWL’s AI matching algorithm can now look across our 15,000 allocator profiles and suggest relevant follows for our users. The more allocators users follow, the sharper those suggestions will become. Our algorithm gets better with feedback, so please keep telling us what looks right and what does not!

Refreshed and Expanded OWL Groups

Groups are the best way to organize and track managers and allocators you care about, and they got a significant upgrade in August.

Expanded groups. We rebuilt the OWL-curated manager groups and expanded them meaningfully across asset class and industries. As a reminder, OWL groups are curated lists of managers that are frequently found in allocators’ portfolios.

We also added curated allocator groups for the first time, so the same organizing tools now work across both sides of the platform. You can switch to allocator groups with the toggle on the top left of the page.

A single place to browse groups. The new OWL Groups page collects every curated group in one view.

One-click cloning. From the summary page, any curated group can be copied into your own account in a single click, giving you a starting point you can then edit, extend, and track as your own.

Group filters in the feed. You can now filter your feed by groups, enabling you to further narrow your view as needed. As a reminder to our users, the primary feed on your dashboard is powered by managers you follow and add to groups, so we encourage you to follow any managers you want to get alerts about.

Private Company Pages and Search

Private companies now have dedicated pages on OWL, and you can search for them using our global search function.

This builds on the private holdings work we shipped earlier this year; rather than only encountering a private company as a line item inside a portfolio, you can now go straight to the company and see its full data, including its funding history and investors over time.

Better Location Data on Managers

A manager's city and country used to come only from the address on their regulatory filings, which left some manager profiles with no location at all. In August, we added a secondary data source, filling in locations for more than 4,300 additional managers. As a reminder, our search tools can be viewed as either a table or a map.

Inviting Managers to OWL

For our allocators, it is now even easier to invite a manager to OWL. We encourage all of our allocator users to invite high-quality managers to join the platform!

Connecting OWL to Your AI Tools

Following the AI access work earlier this year, there is now a self-serve Integrations page in your account settings with step-by-step instructions for connecting OWL to your AI assistant. Setting up access no longer requires going through our team.

As always, if you have feedback or ideas, please reach out.
