Today is an exciting day at OWL HQ - not just because Hurricane Helene blew through this morning, but also because we are officially launching customized email alerts for all OWL users!
OWL users who have created a “My Portfolio” will start to receive email alerts for the managers they follow as we roll this feature out next week. Initially, these alerts will include team changes and new transactions detected in our global ownership database. Next, we’ll add business updates (Form D, ADVs, etc.), allocator disclosures, relevant news/articles, and more! We encourage all OWL users to create a portfolio so that they start getting these alerts.
The position updates allow our users to get timely notices when the managers they care about disclose transactions sourced from dozens of countries and disclosure types. My email alert this morning had the following transactions in it for example:
Effissimo disclosed increased positions in several Japanese stocks, including Sanken Electric on Sep. 9th and RICOH on Sep. 11th.
Viking increased its short in BMW on Sep. 18th, a position in the German auto company now worth over $300 million.
Deep Track disclosed an increased stake in US biotech company Dynavax Technologies on Sep. 16th.
Darsana increased its short position in the French satellite services company SES on Sep. 20th.
People Alerts
While we love tracking positions, we’re particularly excited to include OWL’s unique database of team information in these alerts. OWL covers more than 11,000 managers across asset classes, and that now includes more than one million profiles of current and former employees.
For any group of managers – hedge funds, PE, venture, credit, etc. – OWL can now alert you if there are changes to the teams, such as departures, new hires, and promotions. I always wished this existed when I was an allocator, given the large number of managers I was responsible for following at any particular time.
For allocators who invest in or like to follow emerging managers, this is a powerful and unique sourcing tool. While OWL tracks various data points that appear early in a manager’s life, the first disclosure often comes through people data. For example, someone leaving a well-regarded firm will typically update their LinkedIn months before they file a form D, ADV, or 13F.
As an example, below, we can see that Timothy Wang was part of a string of departures at Boyu in early 2021 before publicly announcing the founding of Monolith Management later that fall.

To highlight the value of our people alerts, we looked through our data for smaller, early-stage managers that recently spun out of well-regarded firms. Every manager on this list would have been flagged via our new email alerts had OWL users followed their “Previous Firm.”
This search focused on fundamental equity managers, but you can use our alerts to track turnover and spinouts from any type of manager - pod shops, PE, VC, credit funds, etc. There are many ways to source early-stage managers in OWL, and we’re excited to add this powerful new tool!
